Hello,
Do you know if it's possible to get R&P set from a 02A or 02J gearbox and swap it in a 020 gearbox?
I wanted to make a gearbox who allow my diesel dailycar to run at a lower rpm to improve comsuption.
The longest R&P set in a stock 020 gearbox is 3,67.
I wanted to put a longer R&P set from a 02A or 02J gearbox.
Is it possible?
Thank you for your time.

Hello --
Thanks for contacting me, I appreciate it!
Unfortunately, it is not possible to fit that R&P into the 020, the parts are physically too large to fit into the casing. The bearings used on the 02A/J diff are larger, the ring gear is larger, and it just cannot be done.
Your only option is to swap in a taller 5th gear, but there is only so much that can offer, and obviously only in 5th gear.... the R&P would drop the ratios of all the gears but like you said, 3.67 is about as tall as it gets for the 020.
There is a 3.65 R&P set, but it is rare and the difference between the 3.67 and 3.65 won't even be noticed so it certainly isn't worth the work to swap it in.
0.71 is the tallest 5th gear set that can be fit into the 020, and on 16V and Mk3 2.0L trans, that 0.71 set will need modified to allow it to work in those trans due to the special clip used to secure the gear in those boxes. The 0.71 will fit no problem into any MK1 or MK2 8V box, as well as MK3 1.8L and 1.9L trans.

Hello,
Thanks you for your answer.
Now I've got a 4T gearbox type with 3,67 R&P set and 0,75 5th gearbox.
The better stock gearbox type I could find is a 6G, with 3,65 R&P set and 0,71 5th gear.
But the result doesn't reach my goal.
Do you know if it's possible to use R&P set from a VW polo g40 gearbox? (3,33 R&P set, I don't know the gearbox type)
If it's not possible, the better solution for me was to made my gearbox from a 02a/j?
Thanks.

Hello --
I'm not sure on the G40 trans, we never had that box here, so I can't say for sure. If I were a betting man, I'd say it would not fit. I would imagine the polo gears wouldn't fit into the 020 casing.
Be sure to check the over-all ratio of the 02A/J trans types... while they may have a taller R&P set, the forward gears may be lower than that of the 020, so the overall ratio will remain roughly the same.
Sorry I can't answer the G40 trans questions... if the 3.65 and 0.71 don't get it low enough, you might have to consider the 02A type to use, or look into having a custom 5th gear set made.

Hello,
OK, thank you for all these information.
I will continue to check the spec of 02a/j
Thanks a lot.
